We went on a day trip to Macau today, which took an hour on a catamaran to get there. Macau is a small island famous now for casinos, but was previously inhabited by the Portuguese. When we arrived our first impressions were of a mini Vegas, complete with gaudy buildings and some truly delightful fountains to boot! The famous old casino Hotel Lisboa, now looks small and outdated against the new shinier models which dominate the small island. We quickly made our way away from the Chinese tourists (gambling for the day, as it is illegal in China) and into the colonial district. Its such a pretty island once you get away from the false front, all the streets were small and windy and its quite hilly as well! We went to see the various churches (far too many to count) and we got a cable car and walked all the way up the hill to the light house, which was originally on the coast, but due to land reclamation, it's now in the middle of Macau!!
We also went to see the old city fort and the remains of St Pauls Church, which has now become a national symbol of Macau!
For the finale we went up the Macau Tower, which is 338 metres high. It was quite impressive and offered bungee jumping so we watched whilst mad people threw themselves off the tower! There was a glass floor as well, which made me feel a bit dizzy!
After that we headed back to the ferry and managed to get a free upgrade as we had prebooked the ticket online. We didn't realise that not only did this mean we get to sit on the top deck, but we also got complimentary food and drink! Either way we had a really enjoyable (and rather hot) day out! Tonight is our last night in HK and we leave tomorrow morning on an overnight train to Shanghai!
We hope you are all well,
Missing you lots,
Lots of Love,
Chris and Alex xxx
